What to do if your child is unable to attend school

A telephone call as early as possible on the first day of absence is required and a letter explaining the reason for absence should be sent to the Head Teacher on your child’s return.  In the case of an infectious illness your child should only return at your doctor’s recommendation.  We would ask parents not to send their children back to school too soon after any period of illness, especially in the case of sickness and diarrhoea when children should not return to school until 48 hours after the last attack.

Holidays in term time: Links between Attendance and Attainment

Recent changes to the 2006 regulations mean that requests for family holidays can no longer be authorised by the school unless there are exceptional circumstances.

Exceptional Circumstances may include

  • Armed Forces personnel returning from a tour of duty
  • Police or other service personnel whose leave has been cancelled during school holidays
  • Family Funeral/Wedding

If you are intending on taking your child out of school on a family holiday, please complete a leave of absence form. Once complete please hand it to the school office.

The Local Authority operates a system where any pupil will meet the criteria for legal intervention where they have:

  • at least 9 sessions (4.5 school days) lost to unauthorised absence by the pupil during the last 6 school weeks

The intervention could be in the form of a Fixed Penalty Notice. Any pupil at Spixworth Infant School who meets either of the criteria, will be referred to the Local Authority for action to be considered.

If a fixed penalty notice is issued the arrangement for the payment will be detailed on the penalty notice. The penalty is £60 if paid within 21 days of receipt of the notice, rising to £120 if paid after 21 days but within 28 days of the receipt of the notice. The fixed penalty notice is per parent per child. You should be aware that failure to pay the total amount within the timescale will result in legal action being taken.

Each year the Governors set an attendance target.  This year the target is 96% attendance.  You may have noticed that each week we are displaying our attendance figures outside classrooms for your information.  We have also introduced weekly class attendance certificates for the class with the best attendance and half termly and termly certificates for individual children.    In order to achieve our attendance target please try to make doctors and dental appointments outside school hours.  We understand that young children, especially those who have recently started school, pick up lots of bugs, but are happy to have children in school who have minor coughs and colds.  We do ask that any child who has sickness or diarrhoea does not return to school until 48 hours after the last incident.  Children who miss out on only a small amount of school find it difficult to catch up on the work missed and children who miss an average of 1 day per week miss out on half a terms worth of school over a year.  Even 1 week a year adds up to nearly half a term of missed learning before they leave Junior School.  We look forward to working with you to achieve our attendance target this year.

Illness and emergencies

If your child is taken ill or has an accident during the day we will need to contact you as soon as possible.  Please provide the school office with up to date home and work telephone numbers.  The number of a relative or friend would also be helpful if we cannot contact you personally.   Children collected or returned to school during the day must report to the school office for signing in or out of the register so that we have up to date information in case of a fire or other emergency.
